Besides having been called the Old Spanish Trail in 1928, it was also sometimes called the Southern Route 66.

MS Beaches
As a young boy visiting New York City, I was amazed by the great number of city residents who had never visited the Statue of Liberty or went up the Empire State Building.
I also find that a large number of Coastians have never stopped to read the etchings on the many State Magnolia markers and stone monuments that dot the coast line.
"Mississippi Beaches" is not only for visitors who wish to seek out all the interesting places and heritage markers, but also for Coast residents who wish to refresh their knowledge of South Mississippi's history and heritage.
Uniquely, each marker and each heritage site has been read and posted for its GPS reading of Latitude and Longitude. Most of the traffic lights along Hwy. 90 have also been posted with Global Position System readings.
The route moves from west to east, out from Slidell, LA in the direction of Mobile, AL. crossing through the three coastal counties of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson. For easy identification, hundreds of photgraphs covering 60 miles of beaches and harbors --- and more than 80 miles of Hwy. 90 are shown. In addition, short off-shore treks of significance are described for reader interest.
Like a string of Pearls, the Sister Cities of the coast are fully refreshed in descriptions and photographic depictions.
